Step 1
I came across this little cluster of farm buildings on a steep hillside as I climbed to explore a castle burg in Switzerland. It seemed so secluded and rustic, like something in Heidi. I wanted to let the light filter through enough to cast its rays on the structures.
Step 2
My photograph didn’t give me much to work with, but I knew what I wanted to portray in this scene. My little rough value study gave me let me explore the lighting to bring out the drama. I could envision the light just falling on the little buildings casting a warm glow.
Step 3
In this case I didn’t shoot many photos of the painting process. That usually means that I was so excited I forgot to stop. That’s a good sign. Anyway, here’s my reference photo next to the completed painting. You be the judge whether or not I was successful in my work.
Step 4
Now you probably won’t be able to travel to Switzerland and find this actual spot. But I hope when you look at the painting you think you could. It is not so much a place as a feeling for a place. It comes from deep in my imagination after first experiencing something profound.
