Creating an Eyepath – English Church 1
This is a photo I shot of a cool-looking church in the Yorkshire Dales area of England. I decide that the strong horizontal line takes the viewer off the page. I plan an eyepath for the viewer which will lead the viewer into my painting and to my center of interest.

In my thumbnail study I create a new eyepath, as well as control the values to create greater interest on the church. Even the cloud patterns lead the eye to the subject.

Looking at the finished painting alongside the reference photo you can easily see how my design changes added a lot to the painting. Always plan your painting before you begin. Never set out to just copy a photo. There is no purpose in that. Always strive to add your own touch to make the painting better.
