“Pine Creek” 14 x 20 watercolor of Zion National Park. This is one of my favorite painting spots in Zion. The colors are spectacular any time of year, but Autumn is especially stunning. I used multiple glazes to build up the color.
One of the things I try to accomplish in my initial glazes is to build up as much texture as possible right from the start. I do this by letting pigments mingle on the paper, and doing a lot of splattering as the glazes start to dry.
As I darken the values, I use the negative painting technique to paint around the yellow foliage on the trees, being careful to shape the edges. ON the final details I can use positive painting for the sticks and branches.
