The John Johnson Home
Watercolor Painting near Kirtland Ohio
About this Item
Joseph and Emma Smith lived for a time at the John Johnson Farm in Hiram near Kirtland Ohio. It was here that Joseph was dragged from bed and tarred and feathered by a brutal mob. They bragged that he would never preach again. Yet the next morning he stood on the front porch bruised and burned, and delivered a strong sermon to a large congregation. A bowery stood at the front of the home providing shade for the huge crowds which gathered here for sunday services and for several Church conferences. The home has been restored to the condition seen in the painting and is now a visitors center operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
