Susquehanna River

Watercolor Landscape Painting of the Susquehanna River

About this Item

This painting depicts the place on the Susquehanna River near Harmony (now Oakland), Pennsylvania where Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery received the Priesthood in 1829. With the authority given them they were authorized to baptize each other in the river. Joseph and Emma Smith had moved here to escape persecution and lived here until August 1830. The home they lived in burned down in 1919. The LDS Church acquired the land where Joseph and Emma lived and about 6 acres of riverfront property where the Aaronic Priesthood was restored.
