I have a pretty nice reference photo that I shot in Zion National Park. I was drawn to the pattern of intense warm morning light and the cool cast shadows on the cliffs. A quick 3-minute small value study helps me compose the painting, and decide where my center of interest will be. This acts as a roadmap and guide as I proceed.
