Taylor Creek Trail Instructional DVD

Cliffs of Zion Instructional DVD. Follow along as artist Roland Lee paints a landscape of Zion National Park’s soaring red and white sandstone cliffs. Untitled-1

“I have painted the striking cliffs and canyons of Zion National Park many times over the past 40 years. The dance of sunlight and shadow makes a wonderful production on the backdrop of stone. On this painting I concentrated on the textures and colors in the lower rock face and studied how the shadows fell across the surfaces. Come join me in my studio and watch over my shoulder as I  use my memory and artistic license to come up with a painting that is much better than my reference photos.” — Roland Lee

Cliffs of Zion 10

What is it that makes a good painting? Many people think if you can copy a photograph you will have a good painting. That is usually not the case. Each artist makes a painting his or her own by using experiences and memories gained through on-location field studies and photography, liberal creative license, and good design principles–all mixed carefully and joyfully together. The end result should be much better and more exciting than just a photo snapped without thought in the field.

In this video Roland explains and demonstrates every step of the creative process. He will tell you about his on-location experience, why the scene caught his attention, and what he did to make the painting something special. Along the way YOU will learn how to manipulate your own photographs in simple ways to make YOUR paintings better.

You can sit back and enjoy watching Roland paint, or you can follow his instructions and work on your own paintings by starting adn stopping the DVD, re-winding to watch more carefully, and taking your own time to study particular techniques over and over again. Techniques such as wet-into-wet, scumbling with the side of your brush, negative painting, and splattering a drying wash with clear water will all be demonstrated. You even get to see how Roland deals with unexpected results and uses various techniques to alter and correct a painting. It’s all done in real time with live narration and on-screen titles.

IMG_7383Each of Roland’s instructional videos begins with a time-lapse of the entire process so you can see where you are headed. Then follows a step by step explanation and live demonstration of how to plan the painting, mix pigments on the palette and on the paper, control moisture on the paper, use the brushes in special ways, and put it all together to make a good painting. Get ready to watch, learn, and have fun!
