Symbol of Freedom

American Flag flown after 911

About this Item

Following the 911 attack all planes were grounded. We had scheduled a painting trip to Vermont which left the day the ariports opened again. We decided to go ahead and make the trip and it turned out to be a spiritually enriching experience. As we left Utah the American flags were lining the streets and draped on the houses. As we traveled the tiny backroads of New England we saw the same display of patriotism, coupled with an outpouring of human kindness and goodwill. Many of the old barns and revolutionary war era homes were draped with American flags. Passing this one put a lump in my throat and made me want to do a painting of it. I still love that painting!
