SUMMARY:Zion National Park Centennial Art Event
DESCRIPTION:Roland Lee will be participating as a Centennial Artist and presenting live painting demonstrations at this years Zion Centennial event November 6-10\, 2019 at Zion National Park. Honoring Zion National Park’s 2019 Centennial\, the Forever Project\, in partnership with the Park\, have planned a distinct celebration of art and history during our traditional plein air art week\, November 6-10\, 2019. Along with our featured artist\, Arlene Braithwaite\, we’ve invited ten artists from among the featured artists of our first ten years to participate in this year’s celebration as “Centennial Artists.” This year’s event is shorter\, modified\, and more streamlined to fit in with the other great things happening during the Zion National Park Centennial. We’re calling it: “100 Objects – 100 Images\,” and it will juxtapose the legacy of art in the canyon with the park’s history. It is designed to continue\, in a new and exciting way\, the great tradition of art in the park established over the first ten years of our plein air event.

SUMMARY:Plein Air Utah Artists Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The town hall at Midway\, Utah will be the headquarters for a fantastic four-day artists retreat including seminars\, demos\, plein air painting\, food\, and instruction. Co-sponsored by the Midway Art Association and the Plein Air Painters of Utah\, the event is now in its 4th and will be even more fantastic than previous years. The event is limited to just 100 people who will be divided up into groups for individual instruction from over 22 instructors and many live painting activities. In addition there will be an art exhibit and sale in the town hall.

SUMMARY:Art Talk - "The Life and Work of Robert Shepherd"
DESCRIPTION:Roland Lee will introduce the opening of a major retrospective exhibit of the works of Robert Shepherd with an art talk at 7pm August 15 at the St\, George Art Museum. Robert Shepherd had a profound effect on the art community in St. George after moving here in the early 1970’s. Not only was he active until his death at age 82\, but he created a massive body of work including watercolors\, oils\, and pastels. His exhibit “Robert Shepherd – An Inspiration” will feature a number of his works gathered from private collections as well as from the permanent collections of the St. George Art Museum and Dixie State University. Robert was a mentor to Roland Lee as well as many others in our area. His exhibit begins Friday August 15 and continues through October 22\, 2019.

In 1963\, watercolorist Milford Zornes bought Maynard Dixon’s Summer Home and Studio in Mt. Carmel\, Utah from Dixon’s widow\, Edith Hamlin. Afterwards\, Zornes organized annual watercolor workshops for fellow artists and students so they could paint together. In the spirit of Zornes’ vision there’s going to be a gathering of artists who paint in watercolor\, October 11-15\, 2017. \nOrganized by watercolor artist Carolyn Lord\, with assistance from Spike Ress\, the event is generously supported by The Thunderbird Foundation Fine Art Gallery with hosts Susan and Paul Bingham\, founders of The Thunderbird Foundation for the Arts and restorers of the Maynard Dixon Home & studio\, in Mt Carmel\, Utah. \nNiether a competition or a public event\, the invitational paint-out allows watercolor artists to gather\, socialize\, and paint outdoors in the East Zion area. During the event plein air paintings will be on display in the gallery area and available for purchase. DESCRIPTION:An opening reception will be held from 6 to 8pm September 15 at the Syracuse Community Center\, 1912 West 1900 South\, Syracuse\, UT.\nA group show of plein air landscape paintings featuring Utah National Parks will be on display for a couple of weeks at the Syracuse Community Art Center. The paintings are the result of participation in workshops with artist Roland Lee this summer in the Zion\, Mt. Carmel\, and Bryce Canyon areas. Although the objective of the show is to spotlight plein air works completed outdoors\, some will be studio pieces created from studies and sketches completed on location. The workshops and art exhibit are sponsored by the Syracuse Guild for the Visual Arts.

SUMMARY:Zion National Park Plein Air Art Invitational
DESCRIPTION:November 7 – 13\, 2016. 24 of the nation’s best outdoor painters will converge on Zion National Park for a week of plein air painting.  Roland Lee will present a free hour-long painting demonstration on the patio of the Human History Museum at 1:00 pm Wednesday November 9. \nThe Zion National Park Plein Air Art Invitational celebrates  the creation and history of the park by hosting 24 of the finest landscape artists. Park visitors will have many unique opportunities to watch and interact with great artists at work and attend daily painting demonstrations and lectures as well as a paint-out and auction on Saturday which cap the week of celebration.  At the conclusion of the event\, over 150 paintings will go on sale at the Zion Human History Museum on Saturday and Sunday\, November 12 and 13\, 2016. Funds raised are used to assist the Park with youth initiative projects and furthering the arts in Zion Canyon. \n

DESCRIPTION:Point Supreme Cedar Breaks painting by Roland Lee \nRoland Lee and Brad Holt will present plein air painting demonstrations prior to a silent auction on Friday afternoon July 15\, 2016 at the Giant Steps Lodge in Brian Head\, UT \nGet ready for the second annual Cedar Breaks National Monument\, Arts Afire Plein Air Event\, a Plein Air painting invitational and art exhibition. This event is free to visitors and will take place the week of July 11-16\, 2016\, in Cedar Breaks National Monument and surrounding areas. Studio pieces and Plein Air artwork created for this event will be exhibited at the brand newSouthern Utah Museum of Art (SUMA) in nearby Cedar City\, Utah through September 1\, 2016. \nPlein air artists cap­ture the spirit and essence of a land­scape by interpreting the nat­ural light\, color and move­ments of their subject into their works. The exhibit theme will feature studio pieces illustrating parks found in Southern Utah in addition to Plein Air paintings created during the 2016 Cedar Breaks Plein Air Art Event. Artists are challenged to document the mood\, seasons and rhythms found within southern Utah’s national parks and monuments by drawing and painting the landscapes Plein Air\, or outdoors on site. The Arts Afire Exhibition will hang from July 16 to September 1.

The new 20\,500 square foot Beverly Taylor Sorenson Art Center which opens July 7\, 2016 is the cultural centerpiece of Southern Utah University and includes 6\,600 square feet of gallery space.  Roland Lee’s watercolor painting “Life on the Edge – Cedar Breaks” was chosen for exhibition in this show and sale.
